hello i had my boat out yesterday, started a little rough.gave it some throttle n let it warm up a bit. noticed my temp gauge isnt working but oil, gas, and rpm is.not sure how to change temp gauge, but this isnt my main problem. we cruised around a bit felt grt. after 20 mins or so i gave it full throttle, rpms went to 2500 to 3000. thinking to myself this is fast but not 40 to 50 mph fast. we went thru a canal with a no wake zone. i idled thru and got to the other side, full throttle and wham it went to 4500 to 5000 and we were cruising. i adjust the trim and after say 10 mins without me touching the throttle it just died, had power the motor was still running but no rpms or speed. i grabbed the throttle and eased it back to middle n slowly pushed it forward and had no more probs for a bit. we trolled around for 20 mins or so , then went to full throttle and wham it did it again. then again a 3500 and 3000 rpms. if i stayed around 2500 rpms and under no isssues at all runs grt. no sputters no shakes. my concern here was i could not see the water coming out of the drive like you do on a outboard. too different animals i know but it still concerns me. not sure if it comes out of the prop or not.going to change plugs, cap ,rotor, and plugs to see if that is my prob or is my prop slipping at a higher rpm. thanks in advance for all and any help on all of this.

Ayuh,..... That's confusing,.... It Died, or it didn't,..??

The motor was at 4500 to 5000 rpms, or not,..??

If the motor was makin' power, but the boat wasn't movin',... Ya, sounds like a prop hub that's shot,....

If the motor can only run 3000 rpms, 'n can't plane the hull,.....
It sounds like Bad gas, Crud in the filters, or even in the carb, or water in the gas,....

Was it pulling all the RPMs in the engine, but wasn't spinnin' the prop? Kinda' winding out but not going anywhere?

Is this a Cobra?

Ayuh,.... Sounds like either the prop hub, or the motor coupler is blown,....

To test the prop hub, try a different prop,.....

To test the motor's coupler, look for rubber bits, 'n dust behind the motor where the drive's shaft comes out, or pull the drive, 'n inspect the shaft, 'n coupler,...

yes its a cobra its a 302amrgdp motor 1988 3 litre. when i looked around the motor i found that the carb had two of the bolts missing from a black plastic cover, when i removed the the last screw and cover, i found a coiled spring. its a gm carb 2 jet rochester. looks like the spring is to control a arm that comes out of the carb. could this be part of the problem.

and bondo to answer your other ? when i was in full throttle and around 4500 rpms it was like it went from full throttle to idle with the throttle in the full forward position. when it did this i grabbed throttle and put it back to idle. it didnt over reeve like i pushed in clutch and stepped on the gas peddle if that makes more sense

So if you pushed the throttle back up, would it rev again and then settle back ... or just idle?

Not sure what you're describing on the carb. Could be part of the throttle linkage - I'm not real familiar with your engine.

yes when i pulled the throttle back to idle position and slowly went back up it would be fine. then after awhile it would do the same like it was boging if thats right way spelling it. only get it to 2500 rpms and under, it ran grt. over 2500 rpms it starting boging

so with further searching and lot's of youtube. seems this coil cover is for the choke. thinking now if it was loose and maybe it was choking itself out.

and to answer this problem, it turned out not to be the carb, or a hub problem. it was just a stupid $13.00 fuel/water filter. i pulled the old one out. replaced with new. put a new fuel filter in and then spliced the line after the fuel/water filter and put in a new inline fuel filter. now she runs like a champ.
