Hi All I Am New To This Forum And It Looks Like There Is Lots Of Knowledge Here. I Finally Got My Boat Out In The Water For The First Time It Ran Great. I Just Wished It Had More Power It Has An 85hp Engine And Dont Get Me Wrong It Did Good But As Always You Always Want More, My Question Would Be Is There A Way To Throw In A Bigger Engine To Boost The Speed For Towing Inner Tube Or Carrying More Passengers My Speed Topped At 35mph With 5 Passengers So What Size If Any Can I Upgrade It To By The Way It Is An Outboard Engine Thank U.

If I Typed In Caps I Am Not Yell Typing!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to iboats, I am new also but you can learn a lot from the people on this site

As to your question you can put a bigger engine on and there should be a yellow plaque in your boat that states the max number of passengers and max hp your boat can have, I would guess that it would take at best a 140hp ob but double check what is said on the plaque in your boat

is there any mods that must be made for this 140 to go on? or does it bolt right on? how about wiring is the wiring all the same as the 85hp that is on it now? does the new engine going in have to be a force engine? or can it be any kind of outboard engine? i am new to boating but do have mechanical skills to do a swap if i have the right info. thank u for all the help so far

nope no mods nessesary, because chrysler & force are the same, and use the same transom mounts i just pulled my 85 and dropped the 140 in its place all mounting holes line up. if you go with a different brand of motor you could run into some issues of drilling new holes for mounting. the wiring is the same only on the chrysler you have to use the white wire for the tach and swap the blue on the ignition switch other than that its a piece of cake. the swap took only three hrs good luck don

did you feel a huge difference and was it worth the swap? i went out and had 4 people in it plus one in the inner tube and it pulled at about 30mph but it took a while to get up to speed i just want something that gets up faster how much is a good used 140hp running now adays and what do you think i could get for my 85hp that runs perfect?

the difference is more speed,of course, amazing hole shot, planes out in seconds, it was worth doing and id do it again. with four people and pulling a tube youre really loading it down. i really dont know what youre motor would be worth, i picked up the 140 on ebay for $380.00 took a real big gamble on it , and it turned out to be an awesome runner good luck don

What size of Capri do you have? I have a 1990 Bayliner 20' cuddy with a 120Hp force. Yellow tag says max 125hp ....

A cuddy and five passengers is a hell of a load for an 85. At 35 MPH you are doing as well as can be expected.

Since the cuddy usually is rated a little higher than the open hulls, It MAY be rated for a 120. However, there is a big difference between a 17 and a 19 footer. SO LOOK AT THE CAPACITY PLATE and do not overpower the hull. Old Chrysler engines were made in a variety of sizes--much more than Force-- and will bolt right on. SO: if your hull is rated for say, 110 HP. a Chrysler 105 would bolt on nicely. 'Smatter of fact, If you are getting 35 MPH top speed with the 85, that tells me that the boat is smaller and may be rated for only 90 HP max.

Although I have no qualms about overpowering a hull myself, you need to know that if you do, you could open yourself to all sorts of legal problems. While in most states it is not illegal to overpower, the local gendarmes may roust you mercilessly and if you have an accident, you would automatically be at fault.
