does it go in to reverse? has any one adjusted on the shift cables? Really need some more history on the boat, but do you see the lever at the motor move when you move the control at the front?

If it has a throttle like mine you have to put it in neutral and push the whole lever in to get back in gear. You pull it out in neutral to access fast idle for starting.

Sounds like you pulled it out into the fast idle mode. Put it back to idle and push in towards the box. That should re-engage it and then it should work fine.

Or pushed it in. On my 1983 Force 85 the control has a button in the center you PUSH to use throttle only. In any case, it seems a simple matter that you accidently went into throttle only mode. If not, get some help and readjust your cables. This is not something that needs to go to a dealer/repair shop if you are at all mechanically inclined.
