Re-creating the casting platform has proven to be a PITA for me. I am definitely not a carpenter. Much happier with an electrical schematic and a soldering iron.

Tell me about it. That was a most challenging part of my project as well. My biggest mistake was not allowing enough space for the thickness of the carpet so my carpeted hatches didn't fit. I allowed for some space but not nearly enough. I had to remake the lids.

I'm using Kiwi Grip instead of carpet, but of course I forgot to allow the 1/4in thickness of the hinge. There goes my nice round corners...

Looking at the originals I see they made the same mistake, so I guess I'm just keeping with the original scantlings. ;)

Re: 1987 Blue Fin S170 Rebuild

The demolition work looks pretty good, nice job:) I recently cut my bow sections out of 3/4" ply...and then I recut a few times since I'm no carpenter either.

My 16' Starcraft is very similar, and I agree that the steering wheel could be a bit taller for driving while standing, I'm not going to try to adjust it though, I'll be happy enough if I can reinstall it at all.

That is one heck of a deal you got on the gluvit too.

Do you plan on taking her out on the big lake at all once she's repowered?

St. Clair, or Huron? Once I find a little bigger motor for her sure. My lake is really small so the 50hp isn't really an issue here unless someone wanted to ski behind it. I'll be interested to see how it performs with all this rotted wood and water soaked junk gone. If the cruising speed and fuel mileage improves I may just keep this little two popper unless I come across a screaming deal. The wife really wants something a little bigger, newer, and more family friendly. The beam on this is so narrow that the new Alumacraft Trophy 185 we looked at feels like a battleship in comparison.

Well it ain't perfect, but it's good enough for a fishing boat.

The UPS guy hasn't delivered any of the goodies I'm waiting for yet so out of boredom I decided to add a telltale to the Force 50.

I covered the 3/16 ID copper tube with heat shrink where it passes through the lower cowling to keep corrosion away.

Only a couple items showed up today so I installed the Boyesen reeds, adjusted the carb linkage, and cleaned the head and installed new gaskets. US Composites took forever to ship my order. Looks like I won't see the epoxy until next week.

Re: 1987 Blue Fin S170 Rebuild

I'm still waiting for a ton of stuff. The points and condenser kit showed up today so Installed those and set the timing. The epoxy and the rest of the engine parts should be here tomorrow.

I decided to add a 3in bilge vent system to circulate air under the cockpit sole to prevent mildew and rot in areas that will be basically impossible to access. Two 3in cowl vents with chrome covers will be mounted on top of the gunnels at the stern and bilge hose will extend through cutouts in the sole into the bilge. The starboard vent will mount facing aft behind the anchor light socket and the port vent will face fore. This will promote airflow even while moored. Vents will also be added to circulate air under the casting platform.

I'm also adding a ton of green indirect LED interior lighting with micro switches on the hatch covers. I normally use red LEDs on the racing sailboats but if a fish is bleeding all over the place the red would hide it. I spend a lot of time on the water at night and HATE losing my night vision.

I need a few electrical parts and a small starting battery for the outboard. The only electrical loads the outboard electrical system will see is the ignition system, nav lights, and primary bilge pump. All other electrical loads such as livewell pump, aerator, stereo, cockpit and hatch lighting, sonar, etc.. will run off of the trolling bank consisting of two group 27 deep cycles. The on-board Xantrex charger gets plugged in any time the boat is docked.

I mocked the consoles up at various heights and decided I will be raising them by 3in. I would really like to get them up higher but the boat would look goofy if I raise them too much. 3in turned out to be a decent compromise.

Replacing the current back to back seats with individual pedestals and doing a barrier coat/ablative bottom will have to wait until next year. The wife is itching to get out on the water. I'll also replace the transom wood next year. One of the splash well drains is improperly sealed and allowed water in. Still solid, but we all know what it probably looks like in there.

It looks like I should have the boat in the water some time next week.

Items I still need to source/buy:

Livewell timer
Auto/manual bilge pump switch
Rule 2000 GPH crash pump and 1 1/8in through hull
Vents for livewell hatch
2nd 6gal fuel tank
Mount and power cable for Garmin GPSMAP 72
Water pressure gauge
Mooring cover
New fire extinguisher
Washdown pump system
Junior Deluxe Noise Reduction kit from Defender for outboard cowling
Hatch pulls
120v bulkhead inlet to feed the Xantrex charger
Ram mount for CF28 Toughbook (yes, I'm a nerd)
2 Blue Seas M-series battery switches
Extra sender, mount, and power cable to use sonar at trolling motor.

Re: 1987 Blue Fin S170 Rebuild

The ski hatch, engine parts, and US Composites order finally showed up. The weather here has gone back to frigid at night so the the boat is getting the garage and the epoxy work has gone to the basement. Ski hatch opening roughed out and fitted. Vents were added to casting deck supports. I cut up some leftover ply and raised the consoles 3in. The bottoms and sides of all the decking has been coated with epoxy. The glass and peel ply is all cut and ready. As long as the temps get high enough the decking will be screwed and glassed tomorrow.

Thanks, Guys.

The hatch was a eBay find from Great Lakes Skipper. I plan on using that space as a rod locker. Need a trip or two to Cabela's to get the appropriate parts to keep the rods off the hull.

The jury is still out on this US Composites branded resin. This is the first time I've used it and I definitely should have used the fast hardener.

I was thinking about making an insert out of wood that slips down inside of my ski-locker.....errrr...excuse me.... rod-locker. It would basically be made of plywood and have two sides and a bottom. I would attach a couple of the foam rod holders to the bottom (or sides) and that would hold the rods and keep them off of the bottom of the hull. If access is needed, then remove the rods and lift out the wooden piece. 'L' brackets would allow it to slip in the hole and be supported by the lip on the deck.

Anyway, just a thought that you might be able to use.

I'll be doing something similar with two vertical pieces of ply mounted athwartship, holes drilled for 4 rods, and those plastic tubes used in golf bags fitted in the holes. That's the current plan anyway.

Similar to this:

I'm not putting a liner in mine because I know I'll never clean under it if I do.

Re: 1987 Blue Fin S170 Rebuild

The decking is in and glassed and covered with peel ply. I've got a kerosene forced air heater running in the garage to make sure it cures by tomorrow. The casting deck and hatches are in the basement curing. The bow light and tach arrived today.

If all goes well I'll apply the Kiwi Grip tomorrow and then start reassembling everything when I get home Sunday.

What are the two holes in the back corners for? I also notice two holes in the front deck panel in your basement pics??

The holes in the back are for the bilge vent tubes I'm putting in. The holes in the front are for the livewell inlet and drain.
