I started my 1987 60hp VRO yesterday (with water ears ) for the 1st time after the long winter. Started up and pumping water out the normal outlet fine. I then noticed water running down the side of the lower unit housing. It's coming from the side of the engine block. I can see where it's leaking from and its near a gasket seal. The metal piece where the water is leaking (and with a gasket) is about the size of a book on the side of the motor near the back. I found online a parts breakout of my motor and I believe the part in question is the Exhaust Manifold cover. The gasket for this is only about $6 and looks like about 15 bolts holding the manifold cover on and fairly accessible.
I didn't notice this last fall and the lower unit should have drained properly since I fogged the motor in the fall but I did have the motor tilted up for the winter before I covered everything with a tarp.
My question is do you think this is just a gasket replacement or when I take over the cover will i find more serious issues. Don't seem like coolant water and exhaust manifold should coexist,
