Re: 1987 Evinrude 6hp carb and linkage settings
Welcome to iboats forms.
However something does not look right with your idle needle screw. What I see is what appears to be the crew threads that appear bent over & possibly someone cut a slot in what was left. I would think it should be longer & protrude out the front of the lower cowling with a knob on it.
Does your cowling have a hole lined up with this needle?
The other adjustment(hex) is on the cam roller & there should be a mark on the cam that this roller should just touch when the throttle is slowly moved to which is basically for throttle/timing.
The plastic topped carbs used finer threads than the metal ones so the number of turns out from lightly bottomed out usually are from 3 to 5.
I pulled the slow speed needle and it appears just as in the parts list. I don't think it has been modified at all. I do not have a hole in the lower cowling. This model doesn't have the slow speed idle knob. the only thing protrubing out the cowl is the choke/primer knob. So I should start with this adjusted 3-5 full turns out? bring it in until it stumbles and then open it back up another 1/4 to 1/2 turn?
On the the throttle roller, should the cam and roller be adjusted so there is no contact when the throttle is closed, then just make contact at the notch as throttle is advanced? (after setting the proper butterfly gap with the screw on the top of the butterfly linkage)
Also, what should I do with the stator stop on the right side of the engine. There is a slotted stop that appears to prevent the stator from being too retarded at idle. When should that be set?
Thanks for the responses.
