Just yesterday purchased used 1987 Evinrude 6HP Short Shaft. Got a new propeller and extension for the the lower unit with it. Price seemed to be fair, so I did not bother too much. Starts easily with a fist two pulls, sofar so good. As I transported the motor, laying on the handle, as I am used from my Yamaha F4, there was a little leak coming from the lower part. I expected the site this morning and saw, that there are two square openings (one per each side) where the lower unit is bolted onto the leg and that is where the oil is leaking. I now put the motor straight up and there seems to be no problem. Can you advise me if this is serious and needs to be re-sealed, or if I should not worry...
THank you !

Welcome to iboats.

Gear oil or two stroke oil? Gear oil smells bad ;) Two stroke oil leaking is common from unburned oil and is "usually" black.

The little square openings are to drain water from the leg.
You will get partly burnt oil from the fuel draining from them too.

If its black and smells burnt or of gasoline that all it is.
If its clean looking or smells like gear oil then you have a gear case ( shift rod??) seal leaking .

BTW an '87 model should be run on 50:1 fuel mix even if the decals and the instruction book still say 100:1.

THank you guys for your advice. I will than drain the gearbox and see if there is any emulsion, of if the oil is good. This should give me a good indication of the situation on the gaskets and sealings. Thanks again!
