Hello again,

I was looking at my Seloc Manual to find out where the thermostats are for this motor. The manual says on V-4 engines the thermostat is installed in a bake lite housing between the two heads just below the exhaust housing plate I want to change these out but there is no picture of this. Is this easy to change and how many thermostats are on this engine. My model number is E88MSLCER 88 horsepower SPL V-4 Evinrude. Does anyone have a picture of this for easy understanding?

My scanner is giving trouble, but I think I can lead you in the right direction. The t-stat housing is at the bottom, nearly tucked into the lower cowling, with the two hoses leading to it. Remove the hoses and the three bolts holding it in place. The assembly is spring loaded, so watch out. Inside you'll find two t-stats and two bypass things with springs. The sensing ends of the t-stats face the housing, not the motor. One trick I used in holding it all together is after sitting the new t-stats into the housing, use some gasket adhesive to the new gasket/housing surface and let it set up a while before putting bolting it back on. Use some gasket adhesive on the bolt threads also, it holds up better in the marine environment than anti-seize. Do a search on V-4 thermostat replacement for more details.

O.K. I think I found it. There is two 3/4 diameter rubber hoses going into a rectangular looking piece at the back of the motor between and below the heads and above the exhaust and it is between the cowling and the motor. The other end of that 3/4 diameter rubber hose looks like it is comming one from each head on each side. Yes I counted three bolts maybe 3/8 or half inch size bolts. Does this sound right? Where do I search online for the V-4 thermostat replacement? Thank you very much?

Bubba - Thos 3 bolts can be a bear to remove & install if your engine is like my 1987 110s but it can be done. A 1/4" drive socket with a universal and extra long extension is a big help. You will also need a 7/16" box wrench.

The trick I use to hold the assembly together when reinstalling is rubber bands. When you get the bolts started cut the rubber bands. You will see when you get into it.

I've put assemblies like that together by using plastic wire ties. Same idea, different material.

I am in the process of doing that job now, rubber bands sounds good, i assemble the thermostat assembly useing 3m adhesive( yellow stuff red tube) after its is assembled, then the fun starts of trying to get the damn thing in loosen and removw the lower shroud four 5/3 bolts take that off it gives more room to reassemble, good luck!

look i drilled these holes to remove the bolds.
http://groups.msn.com/outboardpictures/shoebox.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=10
after instalation i filled the holes with plummers putti and sanded it down and spraypait a little.
saves a lot of cusring this way.

other option on a bubleback is lifting the powerhead.

but if you do a tstat job everu other year these holes work fine.

i started out with a small drill 1/4" and i used a round file to file out the drilled hole in the right direction. there must be enouch space for a extension for you wrech.
in between filing stick someting straigt through the hole and see if its straight with the bolds from the tsat cover.

it s not so hard to screw up dont use a big drill bit and file slowly.

reeldutch

My 1983 J90 has the same holes. Makes t-stat changes much easier if you don't mind putting holes in your cowling/pan.

Dave
