Hi there,

I have a 1987 Evinrude 9.9 that I think I sucked up some mud/silt with recently. There is no water coming out the tell tale anymore. It wasn't smart to such up the mud but at least I got it shut off right away.

I used a tiny flathead screwdriver to see if the telltale line was plugged... but it didn't go very far in the hole. I think I have some weed wacker line I can use as well.

What order of inspection should I be looking for a blockage?

Thanks in advance,

Dwight

The tell tale is probably one of the last points of concern. Pull off the lower unit and check or just replace the impeller. Mud and silt is obviously very abrasive. With the lower off, run water up the water tube to clear out the engine cooling passages as best you can (motor not running). Take your time with this. Open up the t.stat cover and spray out the cavity and bypass passage. Test the t.stat using kitchen tongs in a pan of hot water, then rinsing under faucet. Monitor engine operating temp. (IR gun is a good investment).
