1987 Force 125 Tilt / Trim Leak down??

OK - I have read a lot of the messages regarding the array of tilt / trim issues with the Force outboards. Here is my situation.

I just bought a 1987 Bayliner with a Force 125. The tilt and trim run up and down fine when it is on the trailer or not moving. When I am under power (moving forward), I can't get the engine to either trim or tilt. Also, when I do get it lifted, it does have the ever prombematic issue of slowly dropping (very slow).

So, I read a number of the posts here and decided to be adventerous and disasemble the unit. First off, the fluid was all milky (the plug was stipped and I think water was getting in. That is being retapped this weekend). I disconnected the lines and removed the lower pump unit. I then decided what the heck, let's pull the four bolts holding togeher the top piece on the pump unit. Inside, I found three ball bearing, three springs (two tall one short. One one tall, there was a valve plug? on each end..) and four tiny washers. I cleaned up everything and put it back together (but could no figure out where the washers went). Well, the pump still moves the engine up and down, but I have not been in the water yet, and there is still the slow leak down.

Finally.... here is my question.

1) In one of the groves where the ball bearings sat, there was a scored (worn) section. I am wondering if this could be part of the leaking issue.

2) I have read about the o-rings on the needle valve in the lower body. I have the old clip retainers not the allen heads. Any good suggestion for removing them.

3) Where to those washers go?? Do I really need them?

4) I am running 46 weight hydrolic fluid in the system, is that ok?

5) Suggestions as to the cause of the working lift, but not when it is under forward motion?

Thanks for all the help (sorry it was a bit wordy, just wanted to get out all the details).

Mike

1) nope

2) remove clips and run pump. oil will push it out.

3) washers go underneath springs. they shim out the spring to make it push harder

4) nope. use 30W NON-DETERGENT oil. hydraulic fluid is rough on the o-rings.

5) it's probably not the valve simply because you didn't ask any questions about what size ball bearings to use. down in the bottom there are seven seals. four of them are static and don't wear out. two of them are metal to metal and don't wear out. One is a sliding o-ring but the total movement is less than 1/2" per full cycle, it is relatively small, relatively well protected, and it rarely wears out. Up top if water gets into your oil then the first thing to go is ball bearings getting rusty and not seating. But you didn't ask about them. So 9 times out of 10 your valve is good.

Your description fails to mention whether or not pump motor is spinning when you have this problem. might be that pump motor needs brushes/cleaning because isn't running strong enough to generate pressure. could be pressure loss in a cylinder but then you'd see bleed down. could be totally shot trim getting covered up by tilt when on trailer but the pressure relief valve (in tilt piston) prevent you from getting any lift under load. It could be a lot of things. It's rarely the valve.

You can run 30 weight motor oil or transmission fluid or stop in at your local marina or West Marine and they will sell you ($$) hydraulic fluid for TnT's.

The one and only fluid you should use in a 1989 125HP is 30W NON-DETERGENT motor oil.

That said, the problem is not your fluid or fluid level. Does your unit lift all the way up and drift down quickly? Then 99 times out of 100 the problem is your valve body. The motor seals give out about same time as valve body. If you still have your original motor then it is very likely to fail soon too. Once water starts getting into trim motors they don't stay running for long regardless of how pretty they look on outside. The smart money is to get both motor and valve body rebuilt as a unit and be done with it for another 10-20 years.

Does your trim motor seem to be spinning in place? Does it whir and whir and whir and the motor just barely moves ... maybe even stopping at about 1/3 way up? If so then you need whole system overhaul.
