I recently noticed a buzzing noise that comes on after the engine is started. Goes away in about 3 seconds. It appears the starter keeps turning after the engine starts, although the amature arm on the starter is not stuck in the flywheel.

I just noticed this started to happen after I sprayed a bit of WD040 on the teeth in the starter and flywhell. A bit of rust on the teeth.

IS THIS the Sylenoid?????

Any feeback would be appreciated....

Thanks

Hi Fish,
I would oil the top bearing under the starter
gear with regular oil. It sounds like the bearing is getting a little loose. The solenoid being bad would cause the starter to stay engauged all the time or not at all.
...have fun...corm

Re: 1987 FORCE (85HP) Noise after started

I heard a world war three sound once when I started a motor I was werkin on. It would buzz like the "duckens" (ha ha, robo-censor), but when I took the engine cover off, it quit. Found that the noise barrier material was commiing off, making contact with the flywheel..Drove me nuts for about 10 minutes.

But I suspect the same as Corm. Solenoids generally fail by not engaging. But it does happen the other way, (sticking-closed), when the starter draws too much current, forcing the internal contacts in the solenoid to weld-closed. Sometimes the internal spring will break this weld, and the starter will disengage. Other times, nothing short of disconnecting the batttery will get the starter to quit running, meaning replace solenoid, and check current draw from starter motor.
