Four Winns list 130, 165,175,180,200,205,230, and 260 HP in the 1987 195 Sundowner. That means they put in 3.0L, 3.7L, 4.3L, 5.0L and 5.7L in this boat

As to the why...My boat is is very good condition, and works well for me other than the 165 HP. I wouldn't mind the torque/hp of a V-8. Just kickin' around ideas. I have a fresh 3.7 that might be worth a few bucks...

Thanks Dave. I have a copy of the original brochure, but it got wet and the part where it says the engine options is blurred/not readable.

I also have a 87 FourWinns (190) with the 3.7, and contemplated doing a repower. When I "ran the numbers", considering the age of the boat and cost of the repower, and the added weight of the new engine, I decided that it was not worth it for me.

Here are the old catalogs for Fourwinns

You are I are lucky, after 87 it seems fourwinns used only OMC.

Thanks for the link Big Boat. I'm only half lucky.....I got the 3.7 in mine..lol

That's where I am (contemplation). I would need to find the right "deal" on a 5.7, AND get some $ for selling the 3.7. After that, i still have an old boat. Prolly be further ahead just buying a boat with the engine I want.

So you rebuilt your 470 and now want to replace it? Is it just a matter of horsepower?

I've got a Four Winns Horizon 170 and was happy with the boat even with the crappy, worn out engine. Can't wait to put it in the water with the rebuilt engine.

I don't think Bondo was asking why you are repowering.

He was asking why you care what engines were offered by 4Winns.

It has no relevance to what you want to do.

I'd guess you're getting low 40's @WOT now. maybe 42?

With a 383 stroker, I'd predict high 50's..with the right ss prop you might touch 60

This is my first boat, and had no real idea of what I would want in a boat. After running the boat a few times, I now know what I would like in a boat. The size does fit us, as does having a cuddy. I would just like a faster boat with a smoother running V-8. Not knocking the 'ol 3.7, just would like to "upgrade". The "upgrade" will prolly be me getting a different boat.

Hope you get your Horizon in the water soon. That boat should go pretty good with the 3.7 in it.

I figured it would be easier to swap in an engine that was offered in this particular boat, as all the engineering has been done. It looks like you can put just about any engine in any boat. Not so much like a car (what I'm used to working on).

And yes, 40 mph is what I was getting till I trashed the prop this past weekend. Lost 5 mph...lol
