Re: 1987 Glastron SSV197

Another update:

After a few weeks off enjoying summer I am back on the boat.
I have decided that I have to enjoy the boat this summer (what's left of it) so the buffing and polishing will have to wait.

I have installed everything but the new back-to-back seat and the bow seats (I removed to give the boat a good cleaning). We will be taking the boat on a shake down run this weekend for SeaFair.

I have also done some work on the trailer: added new LED lights all around and rebuilts the steps in front of and behind the fenders. I will get photos when I have the trailer hooked up to see the lights.

Here are a couple of photos to apease the masses!
You can see the before photos of these in the second post.

Also re-packed wheel bearings, adjusted the breaks and changed lower end gear oil. Off for its "maiden" voyage this weekend!

Finally got it out on the water!

Came across one problem though...
While towing anyone behind the boat, the boat seemed like it would slip out of gear. I would have to pull the throttle back to neutral and then back into gear before it would go again.

Well my little slipping out of gear problem was a spun hub.
Note to others, don't tow anyone with a 21" prop!

Top speed with only a full tank of gas and myself in the boat was 57mph @ 5500rpm.

Came across the unfortunate, found one soft spot in the deck, right where the captains chair is fastened to the deck, half the screws pulled out.

I also have to replace all the bunk supports and they are way too rusty to have any faith in.

I have one question for the masses though....
When it comes to trimming the motor, how do you know which way to go?

Here is what the trailer frame looked like behind the wheels

Here is what it lookes like after grinding, and 3 coats of paint & primer

The boat/trailer is originally from San Diego and spent the first 15 years of its life in the salt, which is why the trailer is/was so rusty.

Well, seems at though its time to redo the trailer. Towed it up to our cabin for the summer and 3 of the bunk supports broke and I got a flat tire.

Launched the boat, cut off the old bunk supports and replaced with the Tie Down Engineering bunk brackets and new bunk boards. Pulled the boat out and the bunk supports collapsed and the boat is now sitting on the trailer frame and fenders.

I will hopefully be correcting this issue over the Labor Day weekend.

Side note... Always wear eye protection when grinding. 3 days with a metal sliver in the eye doesn't go well.

Re: 1987 Glastron SSV197

A little update on the boat.
The Tie-Down brackets just can't hold the weight of the beast, so I had a metal shop cut some 4x3x1/4 Galvanized angle for the outside bunk brackets using the originals as a template. This spring I will be replacing the inside bunk brackets with some 1/4 bent plate or taking a C channel and cutting it in half. The boat cover is useless, a nice white mold/mildew has began to grow on the carpet. Can't wait to see what spring brings to the old boat!

Hey your boat is looking great. We have one very similar to yours, except a year newer and probably slightly longer...

Check out our restoration project. If you have any questions please let me know, Lord knows I may have some for you. :p

I need to update it with the latest news...

Trim it all the way down to get out of the hole, and then trim it up as you're moving to maximize performance... You'll "hear" it when you hit the sweet spot at full throttle...

If you don't have a functioning trim guage, that could help as well...
