I ran my boat today and it starts fine, when I give it throttle it boggs.
I can push the key in as i'm trying to get on a plane and it will take off!
once I get it going it seems to be not getting enough gas as I can push the key
in and zoom zoom off it goes. It is a VRO and still is oil injected,I seen a inline
clear plastic filter inline and where the batterys are theres a oil filter gas filter.
So? would it be the VRO pump? the filters? I put fresh fuel in it.
Any help plzz. I know by me pushing the key in which sprays fuel
once pushed in it takes off great.
thanks all..

I have the same problem getting on plane, but once i get on plane no loss of power. I think it is carb related, Incorrect float height or blocked up passages. I've really never resolved my issue. Had it at several shops, been through the carbs and it still does it. One of the old wise men will be along to help you out, maybe you'll have better luck than i have had at fixing mine.

Well I hope so LOL Mine was hauling the mail at WOT but I could tell it was not running right.
I'm looking for a sign now as far as a leak or something I might find. My gas bulb was not flatting out but
I did see once it pump up it would never get hard. so i'm out there pumping it up and see no leak so far.
the carb's were gone thru less than a year ago but not saying it ain't carb related.

Yeah i have a hard time thinking carbs on mine that's for sure, since they've been apart about 50 times over the last year or two. My primer bulb definitely pumps up though unlike yours. That sounds like maybe a leaky diaphragm on your VRO.

I would think that its not your fuel pump is ok. If you did have a fuel issue you warning horn would sound due to lack of fuel pressure. Justa thought. Don't know for sure.

When you went though this spring and checked all the fuel filters, one under the hood and the possibly a water seperator. Did you clean and change them? Did you notice alot of particles/dirt? If so you might have a plugged jet. Also if you pump the bulb with the intake plastic off do you notice any fuel dripping either out of the carbs throats or from the fuel line connections? Could either be a air leak or blocked carb jet, or improperly adjusted float bowl. But the float bowl would flood the motor. When you pressed in the choke you would kill the motor. Easy check for improperly adjusted bowl float is flip upside down the carb and blow into the clean piece of fuel line. Air should not pass into the carb.

The motor by your description is starving for fuel. I would not recommend running it until you figure out what is going on. You might want to pull your plugs and check which one is colored different. It should tell you which cylinder you are having problems with at least.

Re: 1987 GT150 Johnson fuel problem?

No warning horn going off and I am going to remove the front plastic to see it a carb is leaking, I just replaced the primer
bulb. Now i,ve been pumping it LOL no fuel yet, But just did it. And your right I ran it today and only ran it a few miles
and thought if infact it was a lean condition I'd better load it up. All cly's are 92lb's all 6 so i'll go pull the plugs and look
to see if there burning diff. It has a water secparater that I know is probley the factory one.I am going to get it off
and look at the fuel as it drains. and change it! For some reason out there after replaceing the bulb I really can't get
it to prime up.I have two tanks and switched from port to starb, maybe it will take some pumping to prime up LOL...

Check your vent on your fuel tank just for kicks to see if maybe something made a home in there.

That is a good one. Vents an also normally a place to check. Also you will want to replace the fuel separator every year. You would be surprise at the stuff that acumilates in there. An if they dry out over the fall and winter they gum up just like carb bowls. Cheap insurance for carb blockages.

Ok got OMC water seperator /fuel filter off and OMG! was it nasty, quite a bit of crap and water.at least a table spoon
full of particles or better. I think it might had been changed back in the 80's but who knows.
I just bought the boat a ranger 373 bass boat and the owner told me it had been setting alot.very little use,
ordered a new one from parts house be in tomorrow. Now off to pull plugs!
again thanks.....

If you got that much out of the filter you might want to drain the tank and sort of clean it. Use brass brush for scrubing. But deffinately buy two or three filters. As soon as you start feeling the motor drag change the filter. If the boat sat there is more than like a ton of crap in the bottom of it. You would be amazed are what grow in there.

Re: 1987 GT150 Johnson fuel problem?

J_k I was amazed in what I seen in that filter, So as you said I will clean the tanks for sure and change the new filter
after a good run once I get it running right. I was just out there thinking of what i've done so far? Even though I have
not looked into the carb's while pumping the gas bulb cause the filter is off at the moment, Right before I removed it
I took the inline plastic 3/8 filter off and pluged it off and the bulb got hard.. But with it hooked up it never got hard
could pump it so that tells me the needle valve is letting fuel go by right?

BTW the gas tanks are two 12 gal. plastic built in tanks. one on each side.
should be able to drain and clean though.

Those tanks should be fairly easy to empty and clean up. You might want to filter the fuel coming out in the gass cans as you drain it. Chees cloth or something else. You might want to stop by harbour frieght and pick up a brush kit for 5 buck and have a couple of coat hangers to attach to them. That way you can scrub around in there. Unfortunately there is only one way to clean/flush out the tank. With a hose or pump. I'd go with a larger garden hose or fuel drain kit from harbour frieght. Jack the front of the boat and kep draing the the back corners of the tank. Not a fun job but it will help a ton.

As to the not getting pressure when you pump. If the bowls are empty the will not seal off until they are full. So it will take quite a bit of time to fill from empty. But if it was not derained then they should firm up pretty quick. 5-10 pumps. You should be able to see the gas going thru the 3/8" filter. Then go from there.

If no pressure then deffinately carb rebuild time. How did you plugs look? Do you replace them every year? A Bad plug will get you too.

No I just bought the boat last week and the owner said he changed them yearly, It set in his shop and was not used
alot. But as I said above he said he had the carbs cleaned and water pump and lower unit serviced. Been about 8 months
sence he last used it. I'll ck the plugs for color tomorrow after work.
