1987 JOHNSON 30HP outboard NEED HELP

I'm working on my nabours 1987 JOHNSON 30HP out board with electric start the problem is it likes to pop when it idles but is fine in higher rpms i need to get the carb off this beast and clean it the carb hasn't been off this motor in 12 years so it due for a cleaning my question is is there an easy way to get the carb off the one nut that holds the carb on is about a 1/8 of a inch from the starter motor and cant get a wrench in to get it off and tryed taking the starter off but it wouldn't come off

so any ideas or any one know were theirs a free online manual or some one that could scan one if they have one or even some advice I could really use it

I have less than 4 day to get this thing to run right there a fishing tournament coming and it need to be done

Sounds like it might be running a little lean, try adjusting the idle mixture screw out 1/8 turn at a time. I had one of these motors and it liked a fairly rich mixture at idle.

If you want to clean the carb why not just pop the starter off? I didn't have that issue since mine was a pull start.

If you need a manual right away I believe the seloc manuals from iboats give you online access right away but check when ordering.
