My engine code is J40TLCUD. I'm using a Johnson Service Manual 35A thru 55. I'm rebuilding the Tilt Cylinder and have run into questions not addressed in the manual. It's concerning the stem valve assembly. After removing it from the tilt piston, the manual states that I should replace the O ring inside the piston. I have, but it makes no mention of the piece that is inside the stem valve. At the end of the stem valve there is a very tiny circlip that holds a small flat washer, on top of a spring that slides into a six-sided threadless nut of sorts that is about 1/4 inch in diameter and 1/2 inch long. It appears to be actuated by the spring and on one end has a small black rubber stop that fits into its tip. IThe rubber tip seems to be marked from wear. Question, since there doesn't seem to be a part listed in the parts manual, is it OK to turn the rubber piece over since it is completely smooth on the other side or just leave it as it is and not worry about how it is marked? The other question concerns the stem valve release rod that screws into the inside base of the tilt cyclinder housing. Manual recommends replacing both small rubber Orings. One fits underneath the base of the release rod perfectly, but if I put the other one on the top of the rod underneath the white plastic piece that slides back and forth, the Oring is very loose and just flops around. Should the rubber Orings be the same size or should the one on the top be smaller for a better fit? Last question, should I be rebuilding the Trim Cylinder while I am at it? If there is a post that would address my concerns I would be happy to go there. Thanks so much for your help.
