so im putting my trim together. it came as a seperate unit when i bought the motor. the elec motor was junk so i took the motor apart, cut the shaft off, stuck it in an elec drill and used the trim at the bench that way. the pistons are going up and done good. slow, but no leaks. only one of the trim cylinders have a supply and return, the one next to the motor/pump. the other one has a single stainless line going in the bottom and an electrical fitting and wire. what is this? a sender? also, how do the piston ends attach to the motor? (trim system not connecting rods) it loooks like a bolt with a shoulder on each side...? and a rubber grommet onsid ethe piston end? i tried google-ing this and got no-where. according to marine engineer.com, its a plastic bushing and a pair 45 dollar bolts. (yeh right) thoughts? ideas?

On my motor and others as well the trim piston rods do not attach to anything they just push against those shouler bolt heads and push to their limit going up and the weight of the motor pushes down when the pistons retract.

Re: 1987 johnson 40 trim questions

its a J40TLCUD. so it has supposed to be a 1987 40 hp, longshaft, remote elec start, power trim motor, with the dreaded VRO. which it is, and has all that stuff. ill get some pics this weekend. point is, i dont have the hardware that goes from the pistons to the trim plate on the motor. the plate had a broked bolt in it. i removed the bolt and re-threaded to the origional 5/16-18 size. it has a 1/2 shoulder bored into the steel or cast iron trim-plate. im wondering if i can use a 5/16 bolt with a bushing? i just dont wanna buy the 38 dollars a piece special bolt. but if i have i guess i dont have a choice. agian sorry about the lack of pics. i googled the image and didnt come up with anything. ill take pics of mine and post em monday.
