I agree with the service manual suggestion...however, if you just want to see a diagram, you can go to www.evinrude.com and look at their online engine diagrams.

Cheers.

Without the service manual I will guarantee you will be back here asking why won't the lower drop more than 1/4 inch or so? The answer is 99% of the first timers don't think about disconnecting the shift rod. If you intend to do any service work yourself, you are well advised to make this purchase. It saves time, has valuable troubleshooting information and can help prevent making very costly mistakes.

[What is the best way to disconnect the shifting rod under the carburator?

Follow your shift cable to the motor and you will notice it is connected to a rod that runs across the front of your motor under your carbs. Take loose the 3/8 nut that holds your shift cable in place. There is a stainless pin you pull out after the rod makes a 90 degree turn. Once this is out you can push the rod in and tilt forward to clear the shift shaft. Next you will unbolt the four screws along the outside of your lower unit under the cavitation plate. Next you will see above your prop a round trim tab. Remove this and there is a 1/2 inch head bolt under it you must remove. Next remove the large bolt in the center under the cavitation plate and your gearcase should slip down. You may have to wiggle it a little to get it to drop.

Don't forget to mark or note the position of your trim plate.
