Hi everyone new to the site ! Just thought I would share a problem I ran into with my MCM 165 not wanting to turn over on start up . This one ran me threw the ringer again & again which at first started with the slave solenoid being bad ! Easy right ? Not so fast ! Finding OEM parts for these older motors is getting hard to find so I picked up a NAPA brand solenoid & hooked it up turned the key to start & nothing . Unlike the old solenoid I could jump the new one at the ignition switch & the motor would crank with the purple wire disconnected . So I went thru the steps of testing all of start components all good ! To make a long story short what I ended up doing was running a ground to one of the smaller terminals on the solenoid & removing the purple/yellow wire all together which attaches to the + side of the start coil . From what I’ve researched this purple/yellow wire adds more power on start up & some have disconnected it all together. So once I removed the purple.yellow turned the key to start & she fired right up ! My only question is did the older solenoids get there ground while being mounted to the engine ?

If in doubt which way the solenoid is grounded I used to just connect it to a battery with some jumper wires. Then with a remote starter button and a test light is the easiest way. If the bracket is the ground and if the solenoid is good then the “I” terminal should give voltage when the “S” is connected to the + side supply. If the bracket is not the ground the then the “I” terminal should close the solenoid if the solenoid is good when connected to a battery.

welcome aboard.

if its a 3 wire solenoid, then yes, mounting tab is the ground

if a 4 wire solenoid, then no

was the solenoid from NAPA a marine one, or automotive. because an automotive one will ignite fumes in the bilge and blow you to Jesus or which ever god you worship
