I have a problem-- this thing stinks.
I mean literally. It is the most horrible, putrid smell you can imagine. I can only assume that the gear lube that was in it needed changing about 5 seasons before the last time it was used. We've obviously drained it, but there is this smell that we can't get rid of. As such, the admiral has banned the outdrive from the garage and it now has to reside in a shed for the time being.
What can I use to get this smell out? I was thinking I could pour in some mineral spirits and let it drain back out, hopefully taking the film of remaining gear lube with it. Obviously the goal is to take it completely apart and clean everything, but to do that requires reintroducing the smell into the garage, which gets in the house, which gets me in the dog house. So I am trying to find a way to "rinse out" the funk so I can return to working in a climate controlled environment.
