I have a 1987 mercruiser 165. I am taking the altenator off do replace a gasket in the engine circulation pump. I removed the main bolt that connects to the crankshaft but can't get the altenator off. Any ideas how?

Thanks for the input. Is that talking about it leaking around the plug in the bottom?

You can borrow a puller from Autozone that will work for pulling, but need to make an adapter to pull it back on. Do not drive it on. The leak should be from the weep hole on the lower port side of the circulating pump.

Re: 1987 mercruiser

What would that adapter be?

The center of rotor is too deep for the installer, so I had to use a short piece of 1" pipe to get it to work (a socket might do). The center bolt is a 1/2 inch fine thread, so you can also use a longer bolt and a stack of greased washers to pull it on. Get a bolt that is long enough to bottom out in the hole with the rotor just started and thread it most of the way in and add enough washers to pull it in maybe 2-3 washer thicknesses at a time so you don't strip out the threads. You don't want to tap it too hard because you cam knock the magnets glued to the inside loose. You will want to replace the timing cover oil seal while you are at it. Both of the camshaft seals face the same direction, the garter spring side away from the block. Any questions, just ask, lots of guys here have done it. Do you have a manual? Good luck.

I definately appriciate all the help. I am not mechanically inclined in any way, but my Dad is very very mechanically inclined. Would you recommend changing the timing chain while everything is apart?

Thanks again. Just an estimate, how long do you think it would take someone that is mechanically inclined to do this?

1st time, it's a 1/2 to a day job with all the parts in hand, and running her afterwards, drinking some suds. Best thing is not to rush, clean all surfaces where gaskets go and get the speedi sleeves in the right spot. (If that is your issue).

(Don't ask how I know about them being off just alittle). :D
