Finally got the beast repaired ,running and shifting correctly. this mystery hose in the lower unit. All i can think is it if for a speedometer sensor?
A lot of Merc gearcases did have the speedo pickup in them. Look for a hole in the aluminum leading edge of the gearcase, and make sure it is not clogged.
