So I’m rebuilding my whole engine From top to bottom due to being Hydro locked. I’m not 100% sure on how it happened but I believe it was through the original bat wings that have never been changed since day one. I want to upgrade the exhaust to the Volvo /Bar marine exhaust but not sure about which parts I will need I also know that the flappers are melted a little bit inside them exhaust so also need them. I’ve tried looking them up but I’m not 100% sure what I’m looking for and what I should get. I’m trying to do this as cheap as possible as I called it a budget rebuild. So far working out. Links we appreciate it if anyone is with a used good one that will work I am open to that as well but I don’t want the original ones I want the new style so I don’t have to worry about it.
here’s a video of before I took the engine out and apart.

Barr OMC/Volvo V-6 center exit manifold/elbow kit
can't post link but there are a number of vendors who sell them, I got mine from Lighthouse Marine in Riverhead Long Island...approx $720 or so...good aftermarket....
although it says fits 89 and up, it will fit the earlier models...
The this style exhaust is what OMC designed to replace the batwings on the V6 models, and they started using it in 1991. When they went into the joint venture with Volvo in '94 this design was continued till Volvo went to the cat converter exhaust. This system uses a 4" elbow outlet and the OMC Y pipe is 3.5"...so the pipes/hoses after the elbow have to allow for this...the easiest way to make it work is to buy the same original parts used by OMC/Volvo which were 2 aluminum 90* exhaust pipes that adapt from 4" to 3.5" and the related hoses and clamps. These parts are no longer sold by BRP but V/P still sells them but they are expensive.
You can use the OE Volvo Penta stuff:
http://www.volvopentastore.com/Exhau...view_id.776004

or GLM makes an aftermarket copy that is much cheaper....search for their batwing to 2 piece kit...
or if you have time they turn up on ebay at times...

The Barr manifolds and elbows were well machined and fit perfect but the paint doesn't really last, give them a coat of Rustolium black before installing....

I wanted it done so paid the price for the VP stuff for the 90* pipes and hoses and after 3 years it looks like new and no leaks, fits like factory. Expensive but worth it. Bad exhaust here in the salt zone will kill an engine in no time....
here's a pic fitting them up to make sure everything fits..

The shutters are right at the top of the Y pipe I think you can still get the OE parts from BRP. If in salt water I’d spend the $$$ for the Volvo parts you might be able to get freshwater used ones from eBay or places like NLA Marine.

is the parts # for the VP upper exhaust pipes plug this into eBay and see what turns up....as far as aftermarket exhaust the one I’d use is Barr vs Sierra or GLM. Barr is cast in USA...

as i I said I used the VP upper exhaust pipes and the VP hoses and it all fit perfect no leaks.
expensive but worth it...at this point in life I don’t have the patience to fool around with stuff that doesn’t fit, leaks corrodes prematurely etc. Once you make the conversion all you have to do if you have to replace the manifolds/elbows in the future is a simple replacement of the manifolds/elbows.
in salt water that’s 5-7 years if you want to avoid engine damage. Including the original set this is the 4th exhaust system I’ve had on this boat (3 sets of batwings+2 piece conversion).

So I found a kit without the Elbows but it says it’s only for a 1994 an up? It is Barr exhaust also.

Also measured the piston ring gap book says for stock its supposed to be between .015-.020 and most of the cylinders are .019 but the last two are .021 and .02 . Is this fine for top ring gap the engine is supposed to be bored .030 over and standard bore is 4.00

Your pistons are stamped .030? I'm not sure, ask Scott Danforth, I'm sure he knows...
The Cobra shutters are all the same as far as I know, there is the pin, 2 grommets and the shutter. When you install you need to drive the old pin out but be careful not to drop the old grommets down the Y pipe. Use a bit of silicone spray to make the pin go through the new grommets easier. I used OE parts you can look em up on crowley marine's webpage under OMC/BRP parts, or marine engine dot com can get them for you as well...If you have any local Evinrude dealers still around they can order OMC parts too.

parts 22 and 47
Sierra or GLM might make an aftermarket version as well..

I just put in a shutter for my 2.3 from marine engine and fit perfectly, I just had to lightly file the holes for the grommets.
