Well it may not last due to the constant pounding of the waves. Even if you patch the big areas; you are not going to be able to fix all the small fissures. You are only as strong as your weakest link. I hope that helps.

I live in SC. Probably about a 6-8 hour drive from you. There are a few shrimp trawlers ready to go with some equipment for $12,000.

Also; I do not believe people are saying you cannot fix it as much as they are saying you should not fix it.

Best of luck,

Bill

No one has mentioned the $800 bucks worth of wiring on this thing to get the electrical back up and running. ;)

If you really plan on repairing this boat you should pm oops and do exactly what he says to do . I mean exactly and cut no corners !!! Your last glass layup will not hold up . This is not just a reg type patch and you should for safety sake take it very seriously !

oops will not comment on this guys thread... if this is the same bloke, which i believe it is... he has the exact same writing style as rogers, or smallboatlover, they both got canned and it was a quiet few months in between each time... he is back again...
People like Frisco and Woodonglass two of the most known iboaters have both chimed in with thier opinions and he just answers with a question asking for advice how to patch the unpatchable! A PATCH WILL NOT FIX WAVES CONSTANTLY BANGING AT YOUR BOAT!!! if you have ever been on a boat such as a ski boat or bass boat. the smallest of waves sends the boat smacking down against the water... one smack and your boat will fall apart with a patch. you will flood your boat, and yes you will be endangering lives... The Coast Guard will have to come save you, they risk thier lives out there already with the idiots who forget to turn the blower on before they start the engine and it goes KABOOM because they had gas vapors in the enginebox. So yes you would be endangering lives... like woodonglass im out...

Wow, What a thread - I like how the OP asks for advice and someone goes into everything that is wrong and why it shouldn't be done and the OP answers by asking as if he never saw the previous post. ie: Should the plywood go on the inside or the outside?

This hull is completely junk. It has been open to the elements for god knows how long, Stringers & transom have barely been mentioned and I would bet they are mush. Now we need to look at the "outboard conversion" - As we all know these rarely ever work out, Especially on a boat this size.

Please look around for a more sutible hull to start with, Save a year or two and get something seaworthy.

(Now the next question will be something like "does the red light go on port or starboard?" :)

Since we've entered the Twilight Zone, I'll offer my $.02

I think you might be able to get this done for less than you're budgeting. Skip the fiberglass entirely...you don't need it. You'll be able to get EXACTLY the same result using other materials that are far less expensive and more easily available. You'll be done far more quickly as well.

For the saw cuts / cracks, I would recommend filling with latex caulk then covering the inside and outside with duct tape. Let the caulk dry before applying the tape. You may need to buy several tubes of caulk / rolls of tape. Buy the cheapest product you can...there's no difference in the quality of materials between manufacturers. That's just a myth.

The sections cut out of the hull will be a little tougher / more expensive. You'll need a piece of drywall. Cut pieces to fit the missing sections of the hull. Don't worry too much if it's not quite right. Use the caulk to put them in place. Fill any gaps with more caulk. Once the caulk is dry, you'll need to cover the inside and the outside with a piece of garbage bag. Tape the garbage bag in place with duct tape.

Paint over everything to make it look nice. A can or two of spray paint should do the trick. Get the cheap stuff.

Do not try to mount the outboard just yet....you need to test your hull repairs. A farmer's pond would be ideal, if you can find one. A large swimming pool might also work. Until you're sure everything is okay, you should NOT put your boat in any water where other boats or people might be present. Safety first. Anyway, once you get your boat into the water, you'll need to let it sit there for a while. I would just let it sit overnight and come back to check on it the next morning.

Try to post lots of pictures so we can follow along. Video would be even better. Please, video!!

Memorable Quotes From Forest Gump

Bubba: "Have you ever been on a real Shrimp boat.
Forest Gump: "No Bubba but I've been on a real big boat once."

Run Forest Run!!!!

Joke or not this thing is beyond a SAFE repair. I knew nothing about restoring a boat until I went to this site. These guys know their stuff & if they wouldn't attempt it neither should you. This is the slow time for boat sales so finding something to your needs shouldn't be difficult. Cost you less in the end.

By the way are there even Shrimp in Georgia?

It is amusing. FWIW, I'm thinking for $500, he should spend $300 on duct tape and $200 for a Minn Kota. He might be able to troll around the launch ramp with it instead of trolling on this forum.

LOL

$200 on tape (you can get the off brand) twin Minn Kota's and batteries. that way he can steer and once he is out he will have the second motor for insurance. :thumb:

You will just need to watch the Mythbusters and see how they built their boat with tape!

On second thought the saw cut down the transom should not be repaired. You could take one of the zippers off a tyvek suit and hot glue it in place over that joint. This un-zippable joint would be perfect for dropping the shrimp nets.

The added benefit is the bigger the seas the better this setup will work and the safer it will become.:deadhorse:
