Re: 1987 V-150 Warning Buzzer

A picture is worth a thousand words but I’ll try to make it short. It looks like a needle barring came loose and bounced around in the #4 combustion chamber for about 3 or 4 hundred RPM’s. Surprisingly enough it still runs good. I showed the mech at the shop I deal with the picture I tried to post and that was his assessment. He was suppressed it wasn’t imbedded in the top of the piston or the head so he said it might not be a barring. His advise was run it but not too far from home, “It might last 2 hours, 2 months, or 2 years. As long as it doesn’t chew up bearings it should not leave you stranded”. I checked for play in the connecting rod and didn’t notice any difference between #4 and the others so I replaced the head gasket and the diaphragm in the poppet valve, ran a compression check, 100 PSI in that cylinder 112 to 116 in the other 5, and took his advise; WENT TUBING!!!!! We ran the hell out of it for about 4 hours with no brake and it held up, no change in tone, still got 5000 RPM, great hole shot, pushed that 19’ Boston Whaler and tuber at 35 mph by the GPS. I’m going to do another compression check before I take it out again and see if #4 lost any more compression. I’m also going to head his words at least for a while and not stray too far from home.

That's where the picture would have been great. From the impressions in the piston and head it was cylindrical, about 3/16” wide and about ¾” long.
