I have several questions about this old motor (looks great under the hood). First, is it normal to clean an old fuel filter instead of replacing when having carbs rebuilt? Second, I went to start my engine this season and once it got going it would bark loudly upon increasing the throttle (no load). It was not continuous but it was regular and loud. Any ideas would be appreciated as I do not want to dump more money into a loser (2 carb jobs @ $250 each in Jax Fl), but as the motor looks so nice I dont mind repairing if that is appropriate. Thanks, Madfisher

If it sounds like a chirping when you start it and when it is running you could be looking at replacing the bottom seal on the crank. I did one last year on a friends 40 and it took me two hours. You have to pull the power head and pull that bottom seal. The engine does not have to come apart. Most likely that is what the problem is. Not a hard job. There is probably a dozen or less bolts that have to be removed, disconnect electrical connectors and you should be good to pull the powerehead. No fancy tools require except some type of a hoist that you could probably rent.

The only items that you would have to purchase for the job would be the two back to back seals and a powerhead gasket. The toughest part will be to remove the poqwerhead bolts without snapping them. <br />Check your compression first on the engine before you do anything.
