1987Johnson Tiller

I have a 1987 Johnson 50 HP tiller that will go into reverse when I push on the shift knob but it kicks out when I let go of the shift knob. Any Ideas what is wrong? Any suggestions for items to check? Other than this the motor has been great for as long as I have used it. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like a worn dog clutch or worn gear, Esoxguy.

Do the service or repair manuals provide sufficient detail for a novice to fix this problem? I would like to try and get this done as we are now in the hard water season and I have a lot of time on my hands to work on the motor.
