I'm trying to get this 88 110 hp evinrude to run. I pretty much know nothing about the history of this motor other than the compression reading were ok. the owner said it ran for him a while back but pretty much gave up on the boat and motor due to health reasons. So bought the manual and went out and started to check it out. First off i have no spark. The first step in the manual says to unplug the power pack and jump 3 wires out of the 4 plug connector that goes to each power pack. one for each bank. Well mine only has one power pack, it has a 5 wire plug, a 2 wire plug and one wire that is yellow and black. I guess my question is, do all 88 110 hp have 2 power packs per bank or do some have one. I double checked the serial number E 110 TL CCA. any suggestions??

One square power pack according to the BRP site. If you need a good parts reference (one that I use daily) http://epc.brp.com.

Check your grounds, I have an 83 90 v4, while not the same technology I have found that bad grounds on the motors can lead to spark issues, especially the ground to the power pack/coils.

I have the 120hp version of your motor, it has one power pack on top. since you do not know the history of the boat/motor, you should just assume the previous owner has messed with everything so double check everything for example, check the ground wire for the power pack/coils and be sure your ignition switch is wired correctly, if the previous owner had the 2 "M" terminals switched, you will not get spark.

Re: 1988 110 hp evinrude question

Thanks guys!! Ok so I pulled the power pack just to check the wiring under it. I nocticed the ground was pretty rough so i cleaned it, put it all back together and spun her over. i couldnt see spark, well i used a screw driver and inserted it in the spark plug wire and spun it over. Well i guess my finger was a little to close and i got lite up. So i have spark now, im sure it was the ground on the coil pack. It fired off which is great. now on to the VRO pump. the owner said it leaks, well after looking at it, it looks liked its cracked. I planned on disconnecting the oil side and just premixing anyway. I thought i remember reading that they sell just he fuel pump side or a VRO pump for just fuel. anyone heard of this. Thanks again for the info.
