The last two trips to the ramp resulted in coming home because engine would not start. It started fine in my driveway on a hose them would not start at the ramp. So first time I recharged the battery overninght. Started right up in the morning. Got everything ready and drop in the ramp. would not run.

the engine does not like to be restarted once it runs for a few minutes, but after a half hour or so it fires right up.

when starting i have noticed drips of fuel leaking out of the carbs. took off the fuel bowls and checked the floats. Everything is clean inside the carb, no gum, varnish or debris.

idle screw 1 full turn out

Can the floats absorb gasoline so they do not perform correctly

I just pulled both carbs off and cleaned everything on them. after i ran it on the hose for a couple mins i shut it off and again it would not restart.

Idle and clutch ahead work fine when underway,

any suggestions

Try shutting off the fuel and allowing the engine to run dry at the end of each start up and or boating trip. Then leave the fuel valve closed until the next time you run the motor. If you don't have a shut off valve disconnect the fuel line and allow the fuel to burn off that way. This will give you a dry start and the carbs won't be flooded when you're ready to go. Good luck!

Can't say for sure but I think that would be a bad habit. Run lean=run hot=seizure. It's fairly easy to do soooo, I would check the fuel pump diaphram for tears or stretching.

I apologize for the post about shutting off the fuel. I thought you had a 5hp there.

With the engine sitting in the normal down position, there should be no gas dripping out of the carburetors. You either have a bad fuel bowl gasket, bad needle valves, or float level is set too high. The other possibility is engaging the choke for too long which floods the engine.

I use the choke to start the engine, once it starts i let it out, if it does not start then gas drips out of the carb.

I have a 1988 125 HP motor. It's kind of finiky to get started, but I've used the following procedure and it seems to work well for me.

1. Squeeze the primer bulb until it gets firm.

2. Put the throttle into the "Neutral fast idle" position. If you are not familiar with this....you pull the throttle handle out towards the center of the boat. It should come out about a quarter of an inch. Sometimes there is a button in the center of the pivot point that you have to press to release the throttle handle out. Depends on what kind of throttle control you have.

3. Once it's in the Neutral fast idle position, I push the throttle forward.

4. Crank the motor while engaging the choke. Only hold the choke in for a maximum of 2 to maybe 3 seconds, but continue cranking. Repeat if necessary, but remember, only hold the choke in for a few seconds each time.

5. Once the motor fires, pull the throttle back to an acceptable idle speed and let it warm up.

6. Once warmed up, pull the throttle back to it's straight upright position (neutral) and the handle will pop back in. You should be good to go.

Keep in mind, if gas is dripping out of the carbs, you are flooding the engine. The "Neutral fast idle position" helps minimize flooding.
