1988 140 hp johnson ob is this yr and make a good model?

i bought a 1988 140 hp johnson ob. heard that it has the same or close power as a 6 cylinder i have not tested it out yet. but wanting to know some general things out about it... its going on a 17 ranger bass boat what speed can i exspect.. compression and all that is all good..120,s is it a power house motor heard it was used alot for racing boats?

That's a pretty good design. Lots of torque. Should be a good motor on that boat.

As far as the same power as a V6, it depends on what V6 you're comparing it to. I doubt seriously that it would keep up with a 300 hp V6 on the same boat.

As for race boats, that powerhead is basically what a SST 100 is. Since that's the only motor legal for SST 100, yes there were a lot of them. They did well in Formula II also. I used to drag race one and beat my share of V6's. Got beat too.

Hey, had a 17 ft fiberglass center console, florida flats type boat with a 86 johnson 140 hp. That thing would seriously fly across Tampa Bay. 38-45 mph depending on the chop and weight aboard.

I think that it was more motor than the boat needed. Wanted to jump to the right over every wave at wot.
