Hi all,
I've just replaced the stator and rectifier-regulator 10 months ago on my 1988 140hp looper. Engine was working perfect after that, then I've noticed that it was having intermittent charging and RPM for the last two months, engine was still running very good. I removed the flywheel and cleaned the magnets, also to make sure the magnets were all in place, and that the stator wasn't melting or anything like that, so I put the flywheel back, ran the motor and everything was working again with no intermittent issue, I was so happy.
Now is having the same problem again, so I suspect that it can be one or more lose wires.
My question is: Could be possible that a wire that is not making good contact somewhere in the connections around the powerpack cause this malfunction everytime I touch the electrical parts on top of the powerpack? If that is the case, which wire colors do I look for in order to find the culprit?
Any help would be eternally appreciated. Thanks.

The power pack itself may be intermittent. Disconnect and clean all terminals and connections. You need the service manual to check igntion systems.

The power pack is for the ignition system only. The tach and charging system are seperate from the pack. Look for yellow wires from the stator going to the regulator and the gray wire going to the tach.

Thanks for that information, I was about to buy a new power pack. I've checked all the wires including the two yellow ones from stator, gray wire that goes to RPM gauge, connections to the power pack, everything seems to be ok, no lose connections, no cut wires, etc...
Today I removed the flywheel again, clean the magnets again with a very fine sandpaper, clean all the stator windings with a small wire brush, installed flywheel back on, start the engine and charging-RPM worked again for less than a minute, after that the RPM gauge started showing intermittent RPM's from 0 to 200, which is very low, while the engine was still running perfect.
I appreciate your inputs. Thanks.
