In need of some experienced advice!
I just bought a new 1988 Johnson outboard 15HP from kijiji (CJ15RCSS). The guy who sold it to me is very trustworthy and a certified mechanic and he had the motor for 8 years and never had serious problems other than regular maintenance. He said it fired up with 2 pulls every time and he even cold started it for me (I’m sure it was cold started because we drove out together to where it was being stored (45 min). It had really good compression and everything seemed solid. He told me to run the motor with a 40:1 fuel to oil ratio because he’d rather change the plugs than deal with overheating problems. I noticed a bit of black oil dripping out of the prop the next day and I texted him and he said he would come change the prop seals for me just in case. So we did that together and changed the gearcase oil (was black) and everything was good. 2 weeks later I went to run it in the water and pumped the primer bulb too many times and flooded the motor and couldn’t get it to start. Brought it home, after letting the motor dry out and put a motor flusher on the water intake of the lower unit and started pumping water into it at pretty high pressure (water was spraying everywhere). Then got it started fairly easy and let it run for a bit. Changed the RPMs quite a bit, put it in forward, reverse etc. Ran it at high rpm. Then I let it sit overnight and came and found this (in photos). Is it possible water from the motor flusher just mixed with some exhausted oil out of the prop leading to this grey sludge? I don’t think the prop seals are bad because we just replaced them and had a good seal. Any ideas?
