trying to get my boat going again after sitting for five years, when i installed new battery the starter just clicks, tried jumping it from yellow and red wire to battery nothing. was told engine may be "frozen" tried to manuelly turn it over from flywheel moves maybe half inch. followed that with removing spark plugs andd putting marvel mystery oil in let it sit 2 days nothing still can"t turn at flywheel. boat is in neutral i believe but lower cable broke out uf houseing near shifter link on motor prop turns freely ? eletric goes to guages and lights, radio work but nothing in rear of boat, blower, trim pump , starter, checked with volt meter 12 volts @starter, blower, pump (tried jumping up/down wire to battery nothing but clicks when i use trim switch. the ground that attached to block is corroided tried to remove but, can"t get it off, could this be the promblem? can i just change location of neg. to another spot on motor? sorry it"s a 1988 165 mercruiser alpha one fresh

You can ground the negative lead from the battery to another bolt on the engine.
Have you tried a set of jumper cables from a fresh battery directly to the starter? Or take the starter off and have it tested.

From the info provided. it sounds like a weak battery and/ or a bad ground.

Let's go back to the engine itself. Are you saying that by turning the engine by hand at the front of the motor (I think that is the stator to the alternator...) you cannot turn it by hand? You should be able to with the plugs out.

I would not try with a starter motor until you can turn it by hand (regardless of in or out of gear...)

Pull the drive off and try turning the crank by hand again post the result. Fog the engine and let it sit.

Can you turn the outdrive by holding onto the shaft where the u-joints are? If so, I would suspect that a frozen gimbal bearing is the culprit. You stated that the drive was loose but initially could not get it off, would lead me to think that the drive shaft was rusted within the gimbal bearing and the balls of the bearing are rusted to their races.

If that is the case, you may want to check (or replace) the u-joint bellows and of course, the gimbal bearing. May be best to check the shift cable bellows also.

I wish I had that problem. :(
Turns out, my cylinders were rusty and had to pull engine, and clean up the bores.
