I have a 1988 200 HP Mercury Outboard, The starter started making some noise so I removed the cowling to inspect. The pinion gear has worn down and started skipping causing the noise, is there a place where you can just order the pinion gear?

The starter seems to function fine?

Starter No. 114/15110344

Thanks/Jerry

If the pinion gear is worn that bad the insides are not that far behind. I’d rebuild the entire thing while you have it apart.

Went through the exercise last Spring. Not really having any issues but decided to clean it up as PM.

Long story, close inspect turned up burnt wires in the armature. Ended up replacing it with aftermarket. Couldn’t believe the difference in cranking speed. No idea the old one was that bad

Thanks,

Just went through the same thing, had it checked out and found other problems inside. Ordered a replacement as the rebuild would have cost more to repair.
