Ok, before the season started I replaced the electric choke and had the carbs rebuilt due to a slight lean sneeze. All things have been running great, though the last two times out I've had a couple moments where the engine didn't want to start. My initial thought was the electric choke had malfunctioned, however I confirmed it was working. the odd, and likely coincidental thing is when I manually engaged the choke it did start up both times. The engine will turn over and the starter spins just fine, it just never even acted like it was going to start. Once it did the engine ran just fine and idled fine. Other times it will start up without a hitch, warm or cold. I don't want to be stranded, so I'm wondering what this could be. I am puzzled by the fact it is intermittent and the engine runs great once it starts.

Re: 1988 200HP starting issue

It looks like I have the very same problem : my Yam 1990 225 HP starts and run usually fine except that sometimes it does not want to start, usually it happens at sea of course, I have been trying to reproduce the problem at the harbour but never succeeded.

To restart it I have to manually engage the choke (red lever on the starter), then it starts, I stop it, put the choke in the normal position, crank it and giving some gas it starts, but this can fail too, then I redo the "procedure" until it works

I don't understand what can be the cause and what's different when it happens since most of the time it starts, I thought maybe it was flooded, I don't know...

I recall an older Yamaha having that problem and it was the choke not closing all the way. It was a minor adjustment and no more problem with cold starts.

Thanks but not sure to understand the answer.

In my case it does not depend on hot or cold (looks like it's more hot start that is the problem).

And it restarts well when choke is open...not closed, so how could be the fact that choke does not close all the way that causes this ?
