When I hit the key, the bendix gear engages the flywheel & spins the motor a few revolutions, then the gear disengages before the motor starts. I repeat these steps multiple times hoping the motor will start?.

Should the starter stay engaged until the key is released, or do I have some worn parts?

it kicks out because the motor is trying to start, and turn faster than the bendix. check spark and compression, when was it last properly serviced?

What you say makes since, It appears the bendix is bouncing lose as the flywheel spins...

I placed the motor in storage, it has been sitting in my shop for 2 yrs.

The starter has been kicking out for some time, one of the reasons I placed it in storage.

I am wanting to get it running and list it for sale
