1988 28hp Evinrude will only start if the Points are heald still

Good morning!

I am going to look at the above engine, model # E28ESLCCR, and was told that the engine ran fine, until one day it just quit. I was also told that it will start, if the Points are help in place.
My main question is, with the above info, is this a sign of a "bigger issue" or could be a simple fix..

Not enough info, but a 1988 28 HP does not have points. Good Luck!

i just picked up the same motor, and also a johnson same year and model, im doing a carb rebuild along with replacing some fuel lines on the johnson. the evinrude runs great johnson doesnt so its getting attn first...anyway whats the price tag on the one your looking at? hows the compression? salt water or not?

Even if it had points, how does one hold them in place with the engine running. Seems like a good way to lose fingers since they would be located UNDER the flywheel (if it had points). Buying an engine that doesn't run should be approached very cautiously. It had best be purchased for scrap value as there is a good chance that what it is worth.

The guy should be giving me a call today.. Looks like a saltwater engine, not sure of the compression yet, asking $250. Once I talk to him, I'll update with more info.. THanks again guys!!
