Great video Frank BTW...Please Confirm:
I Should set my timing to 28* when testing at cranking speed WOT? In a barrel not on the water.
1988 50HP Prestolite. Thanks

Re: 1988 50HP Timing @ Cranking speed

1988 force 50hp Prestolite ignition testing in a barrel @ WOT. My decal on the timing bar is missing. Based on #1 piston travel, I confirmed that the factory notch on my Timing bar lines up with the TDC mark on the flywheel..I adjusted timing so the 28* mark on the flywheel corresponds with the notch on the factory timing bar...Please confirm that I should be 28* BTDC . I am concerned because my original factory timing decal was falling off and I never got a good reference of TDC on the timing plate compared to the Decal..My decal was always askew. The manual shows compensation for early models in reference to this decal...I do not think this decal concerns my engine..Please confirm. Thanks

I hate to bump a thread, But I feel this is important enough to keep on the main page. Anyone have experience timing a 50HP with prestolite ignition..roughly 1988?

Yes 28 degrees is correct when statically timing as you are.

The answer to your PM.
It's 28 like the Tater suggested.
Pics of the flywheel?
They used two kinds in the 88.

I hope these are clear enough, My timing was off 1 degree..Should I expect to see any performance increase from the timing changing from 29 to 28? After getting the timing what I think is right, It coughed when I first started it, but then ran very fine, and SEEMED more responsive and smoother high/low speed transitioning idling in the tank..

I would not expect to see any gains in performance. However, when everything is tuned and working correctly ie, carb adjustment, timing, fuel pump, it should run beautifully as you described, and you will get the max available performance out of it. If you confirmed TDC, and it lined up with the factory block pointer/sticker, I would think you are good to go. Sounds like you did it right to me :)
