had a silimlar problem a couple of years ago. mine died out when i pulled back to nuetral. i adjusted the carbs, then cleaned them..helped a lot. since then, i've run stabile through for winterizing & ran seafoam earlier this year. motor runs much better, rarely stalls, forward, nuetral, reverse she keeps going..

Check the spark plugs. Clean or replace them REGULARLY!! (like every other run)

This really helped mine.

When replacing these types of spark plugs do they need to be gapped? Thanks

NO - factory calls for surface gap plugs, not electrodes. i've been told & believe that electrode plugs could burn a hole in the piston.

Feel the ball after the engine shuts down. If it is soft, there is a good chance that the check valves are sticking in the fuel pump. The symptoms for this are that the engine runs good at high power but will shutdown when you throttle back. It will then start up immediatley but then die out. If you keep pumping the ball the engine will keep running.

I suggest that you use an "Easy Out" made for thin wall tubing to get the valve out of the blind hole. These have four straight flutes instead of the usual spiral flutes. I would also use a socket to press or tap in the new valves.

Replacing these solved all my engine stalling and shutting off problems. It is so reliable now, I don't carry my emergency kicker any more.

Good luck,

John

Yes, two are pressed in, one can be removed with a screwdriver.
