1988 88hp Johnson knocking now won't turn over

I was crusing when my 1988 88 hp Johnson outboard started knocking and losing power. I went to an idle and after a while it stopped knocking. I cruised again for about a half an hour and then it knocked again and then finally stopped. It won't turn over now. I even removed the spark plugs and tried turning it over manually. What do you think?

Well, it doesn't sound too encouraging. Did any spark plugs have aluminum-colored deposits on them?

Sounds like an overheat(maybe sensor isn't working),or engine was running -withiu--out

Sorry don't know what happened there . Could also be that your engine was running without oil.

What should I check? Didn't find anything on the plugs. Do i have to tear the engine apart?
