1988 88hp Rude fuel delivery issue

Engine starts and runs well at low speeds, but when the coals are put to it, it will not run above 3500 rpm. If choked, it runs well, and up to 5k. Fuel bulb (new) stays firm, and squeezing when engine is starving has no effect.

Any ideas appreciated.

If you choke it and it goes, it's most likely a blockage in the carbs. Hitting the choke(Primer) on this model shoot fuel directly into the the cylinders and basically provides the extra fuel that the carbs cannot. You will need to remove and disassemble them to clean them properly. What brought about this problem? Did it ever run well? Been sitting for a while?

The boat is new to us. It ran well for a few weeks, maybe 10 trips, and started acting up. It hasn't sat more than the usual season (northeast) but wasn't used much. It does have a good fuel filter.

Should they be rebuilt while apart or can they just be cleaned?

I would definitely use kits and rebuild them...Make sure you have no air leaks in the fuel lines. It sounds like you have done some work to them already, but double check all the connections. It does sound a bit odd that it ran good for many trips and then goes flat. But the fact that you can make it go by hitting the primer shows that you have adequate fuel to the carbs, just not through them... Red Primer lever is inline with the primer solenoid body, correct? No leaks in that area? Are you running portable fuel tanks or permanent? Any chance you may have gotton some water in the fuel? Running on a separate tank with fresh fuel/oil would eliminate that side.

I changed the external hose and bulb, but not the internal ones (yet) I will check the primer lever, no visible leaks anywhere. We use a permanent tank, but I will run a portable this weekend to rule it out. I guess water is possible, I'll check that as well, does water run through when you feed the engine good fuel?
