Please see the topic (1988 90 HP Johnson Shutting off). I thought the problem was the ignition system but it turned out to be the clutch in the lower outdrive unit.
All is well that ends well.
This is for your information. Seems the dealers/repair shops do not know all that much some times.

Ralph

Ralph.... You really can't lay that one on the dealers or the dealership mechanics unless they actually had the rig in the water.

A jumping out of gear scenario wouldn't show up at a land based dealership unless they were equipped with the proper test wheel and a test tank whereas they could have the engine in gear at full throttle for a substantial amount of time.

If you explained the problem to them as a engine shutting down, shutting off problem (ignition/fuel), that's where they would be centralizing their troubleshooting efforts.

Ralph you went from "killing at speed" to ignition switch to shutting off. You told us what the "problem" was and the gentlemen on this forum tried to help. If I remember correctly, the cutout was rhythmic and not random and the clutch and/or clutch dogs were suggested as the cause of the problem. I'm with Mr. Reeves, you can't lay that on the dealer because I'm sure you led him down the same path that you took us. I'm not berating you, I'm just trying to show you how long it took these experts to come up with the answer (which they did) using the information that you supplied them with. Some off the information you gave was misleading as you said it was an ignition switch problem among other things. Be a little kinder to your local mechanic as you never know when you will need him.

hello
the first time a customer has a complaint I look at the rig. if nothing is visible on the trailer I will assume the customer described it wrong. and if there is a second complaint I have the customer give me a ride while he recreates the symptoms. the description of your problem was very misleading. had you said feels like the motor hits something or someone hits the transom with a bat it would have been more accurate. but sometimes most customers cant accuately describe a problem. that is where the observation on the water comes to play.

Boy you guys are too serious. I did explain to the repair shop about the hitting of a log in the water. They thought the problem could be electrical or fuel related since they could not reproduce the problem in the shop.
Ralph

Re: 1988 90 HP Johnson jumping out of gear

This is where it is really handy to have had teenage boys. Our 1990 90hp needed a new reverse gear and dog clutch about five years ago. I stood on shore and watched them opperate the boat (I was about a year away from having back surgery, so I was not moving so good) and knew immediately that in my time off the water they had forgotten how to be careful with the controls. lol.

The most theraputic thing was removing the LU and taking it to my dealer where they did the work and gave it back to me to reinstall. Took my mind off my lower back for a bit... even though the thing was a little heavy.

Now that my sons are adults, I kind of miss the old days.

fp
