So i am new to the boat world, but no stranger to small block Chevy's. Here's the story. I bought a 19 food trailer and it came with a free Batliner Capri with a 305 chevy. supposedly the motor is bad. i got it running and it runs pretty decent, the problem is the motor was full of water ( like 2 gallons after i pumped it out). changed the filter and added new oil, ran it for about 5 - 10 minutes and it filled the oil pan again with water ( maybe a gallon this time) , being new to boat issue's i was told something about a water valve stuck? or my first thought is Head gaskets. I think the motor may have gotten hot at one point because the hose that supplies water to the engine from the outdrive water pump was not connected.

welcome aboard

most likely the block is cracked from improper winterization.

assume you need a new motor

could be the head gasket, however that is only like a 1 out of 100,000 probability. where freeze damage is about a 99% probability

and the free boat that came with it...... you will need to either pay a disposal fee to get rid of the rotten hull, or you probably need to invest between $3000 and $3500 to restore the hull and another $2000+ to restore the interior.

do a compression check on all cylinders. the hose not being connected is not a good sign.

on a more positive note. you have a 305. if the block is done for, you can swap a 350 block in it and re-use almost everything from the current engine

one more question....

is the outdrive a mercruiser, Volvo, or an OMC?

Bayliner was an OMC company in the 80's, so the two drives normally used back then were OMC or Volvo. only on dealer special order were Mercruisers dropped in.

if its an OMC, I would think long and hard about putting money in it unless the boat has sentimental value.

:welcome: to iBoats.

Yup the motor is bad (cracked engine block) . . . wondering if a 1988 Bayliner is much better than the motor. Free boats are very expensive.
