1988 BERRETTA VOLVO OUTDRIVE & 2.4 LITER

I HAVE A 1988 BERRETTA WITH A VOLVO ENGINE 2.4??<br />WITH A PENTA OUTDRIVE AND WHEN IT START IT,IT RUNS BUT BACKFIRES THROUGH CARB AND THE RUBBER <br />COUPLING ON EXHAUST GETS VERY HOT AND STARTS SMOKING,JUST STARTED THIS YEAR RAN FINE LAST YEAR,<br />IVE REPLACED THE POINTS AND NO CHANGE ANY IDEAS<br />OR HELP WOULD BE GREAT.

I have found the tube that goes from the boat exhaust to the outdrive was ripped more than half<br />the way around it.Could this cause backfire through the carb.and for the exhaust to get very hot?
