:blue: I need to replace the whole transom wood. Not happy ! Is there any other type of product I could use besides wood. I will be pulling my rear unit soon, so I need something I can get easy and fast and not the cost of my last born child. I have soft wood at the bottom of the stern drive on the inside. The outside is aluminium. Thanks

Some use pour in products like seacast (I think that's the name) but wood was used originally. That (wood) isn't costly at all, and if sealed right, should last a long time. Why is your wood rotting? that is what needs to be fixed before replacing the fail.

I just pulled the transom on my Sportsman. Planning on using exterior plywood sealed with a couple of coats of epoxy. I'm redoing the whole boat as my floor was rotted and interior was in sad shape. My transom came out in 3 pieces. Looks like most of my problem came in from the splashwell drain tubes failing, plus some poor maintenance and stored outside without a cover.

Yea, my boat was stored outside for a long time without a cover. I bought it last year. The other owner got it from a friend. He wanted it out of his yard. $600.00 bucks and its yours , he said. I had to gut it. All wood was shot. I repaced all the wood and made it a center consol for fishing only. I still have alot of work to go. Engine is great. No boat payment too. I think my transom is shot too. There is some rot at the base of the transom. I put the plywood deck to close to the aluminum and some snow got under the cover. Now I have soft wood on the edges. Not Happy right now. I hope it dries out. It was painted but the edges were not. This is my first boat restore. Oh well , live and learn. Thanks for the help guys.

Most of the "Tin Boat" guys use ext. grade plywood NOT pressure Treated. and coat it with either epoxy or several coats of Oil Paint or Spar Varnish. The Edges are Critical. That's where the water will "Wick" in so they have to be saturated with the sealer of choice. If you do that the wood will last longer than you will own the boat. If you want to use paint, I'd recommend a first coat of Boiled linseed oil thinned with 50% Mineral spirits and saturate the wood till it pools on top. Wipe off the excess and then let dry for 48 hrs. Then apply the Paint. The BLO has a LOT of solids in it and will seal the wood better than almost anything.

Wood is good, MDO or HDO plywood is real good for what you're going to use it for and much cheaper than the non-wood composite materials.

Use MDO or HDO plywood sealed with 3 or 4 coats of epoxy resin and never worry about having to redo your transom again.

No need for apologies, we are only human.

Firstly, PICTURES! I know it was mentioned already, but that is really the only way to see exactly what your in for.
As far as the Process:
1.Remove motor and drive.
2.Remove old wood.
3.Cut new wood.
4.Seal said wood with sealer of choice. Epoxy usually.
5.Install new sealed wood.
6.Re-install motor and drive.

The difficulty of these steps will vary depending on skill and available tools.
