Bought the boat in January needing work, mainly it was leaking water into the transom. I got all of that repaired and took it out for her maiden voyage yesterday, everything seemed to be in order.
Figured I had better go ahead and check out the impeller as I had no idea how old it is, I went ahead and pulled the cover etc. Impeller looked new so previous owner must have replaced it fairly recently.
But - there wasn't an impeller plate on it ? I am taking for granted the main reason behind the plate is to keep the wear down on the drive housing itself ?

I am replacing the plate no matter what, but am really just curious what it's purpose.
(I am ordering the plate right now)

Howdy,

It's stainless steel (#49 below) . It completes the seal between the impeller, pump housing and the main upper gear housing (water pump adapter) . You could also probably say it "keeps the wear down"

I won't think any of the raw water pumps allow the impeller to run against aluminum. Since the raw water pump can suck up a little sand, the aluminum surface wouldn't last long.

I would say that the PO simply forgot to replace it (or re-install the old one for that matter!).....

There's a gasket (#48 below) under the "plate" too!

Don't forget that!
