Re: 1988 evenrude 50 HP??
Not quite complete, but not far from it. The powerhead has to come off and the crankcase has to be split at the joint to reseal it. If you're in it that far, most shops would want to measure the cylinders for out-of-round. A motor of that age is going to be beyond spec and it'll need boring and new pistons. So we're talking a complete overhaul. If you want to do the job yourself, you can opt to stop at resealing the crankcase. You'll need a base gasket, manifold gasket, and a tube of GelSeal. You might as well replace the crankshaft seals, and there might be a few other gaskets and O-rings needed. The only special tool that comes to mind is a flywheel puller and you can probably have a shop pop that off if you don't have one. Buy the parts there and they might do it fer nuthin. It's probably about a six to eight hour job for an experienced mechanic. You'll also need a torque wrench, they're not expensive.
