I have a 1988 25hp Evinrude that I've had in the shop 3 times for the same problem. The problem is: it runs fine until I shut it off, then I can't restart it again. It never seems to fail for the mechanic at the shop. Any ideas? It's a rope start with a short shaft. The mechanic says the compression is good. It has new Champion plugs and I run a 50 to 1 oil mix with 97 octane gas.

When the engine won't start for you, have you ever taken a spark test right there on the spot? Will the engine start if you leave it set awhile? Try to give a little more information.

Sounds like an electrical component failing after it gets hot. Then when it cools, it starts again. How long is your mechanic running it before he says all is well? Could be the powerpack...

No-I haven't taken a spark test right there on the spot. I'll try that-good idea. Thank you.

I don't think the engine was hot, the last time it failed. I was at the dock and just had mounted the engine on the transom. I started it and ran it just for a little while, maybe 3 or 4 minutes. Then I shut it off and tried to restart it in vain.

Joe-

If the spark test prove good, pump up the bulb so it's firm and try choking it again to see if it will start. Could just be your starting technique needs to be altered a bit. Failing that, bring along a squirt bottle of pre-mix and give it a shot or two in the carb and see if it fires. You might want to pull the spark plugs when it will not start and see what they look like(Wet or Dry). That would tell the story of weather you are getting fuel or not. But I would choke it fully again when you try to re-start. Some motors just need the extra fuel when they start after sitting...

I brought motor to another shop, and even though it ran OK, the mechanic said I had a bad fuel pump? He said the bulb was getting soft. So it does appear that I should have altered my starting sequence as you suggested. I should have treated it as if it was the first start up of the day. Thanks again for the responses.
