Just got this motor...

Was just wondering about previous owners and experience with this motor. Seems solid and very basic. Looks easy to work on.

Also wanted to know if anything can be done easilly to the carb to upgrade it to a 28 or 30hp?

thanks

I bought an '81 last fall. No experience with it yet, but I agree its seems to be an easy to maintain motor. Yours is a late eighties model with thru hub exhaust and hp measured at the prop.
My vote would be to leave it as is. Someone will eventually throw a cheap 28-35hp project motor your way.

FYI.

I'll bet if you did get 30hp out of it, you wouldn't even be able to tell the difference. You could probably change it more to your liking with a different prop than with 5 more horsepower.
You'll like the 25hp like it is. I have a '99 30hp and can't tell ANY difference between it and a 25 of the same year.
Good luck,

Re: 1988 Evinrude 25hp

I've had a few 1980's 20-30 hp motors and I currently use a 1988 Johnson 30 hp on my primary fishing boat. They are great motors. Not much difference between the 25 and 30 hp if they are both thru-hub exhaust. like JBJ says, better performance will come from other things like prop, trim and engine height.

The 28 hp shares the same powerhead as the 30 hp. The hp difference is in the exhaust. The 30 hp has thru-hub while the 28 hp does not.

as said proper prop for you motor and boat combo, correct engine height to the keel, and proper angle to the transom, will make more of a difference, than 5 hp. besides is it an easy way to screw up a great motor. easy to work on, simple.

Re: 1988 Evinrude 25hp

thanks guys

whats the maximum the caviation plate can be below the bottom of the boat and it still function correctly.

the problem is the motor is a long shaft and I am going to get a bigger boat this summer, and if I cant find the boat that I like with the correct transom height, figuring how much I will need to raise the motor.

thanks, or if I can trade it meanwhile for a short shaft.
