I recently aquired a used Pontoon boat from a family memeber. It sat unused the last couple of years.

Yesterday I wanted to see if I could get the engine to run and to see how well it ran. I mixed up some fresh 50:1 and set the lower end in a tub of water. It started up easily enough. Stalled a few times, but I eventually got it to stay running. It definately could run better and it smokes like a fright train, but I can work on that next.

The first problem I see is that, water is coming out of pretty much every hole in the tail. It also comes out of the small pee hole at the base of the motor, which I believe is the only place it SHOULD come out. The motor stays cool to the touch, even after being ran for 20 minutes.

Any thoughts? Also, what ARE the various holes for along the tail? I have a shop manual, and it doesn't mention most of them. I know which ar ethe exhaust and water intake at the bottom. But there is a plate with holes in it just above that. A hole in the back of the tail about half way up. And two holes just under the motor at the back of the tail.

Thanks!!

Chad

Hi Chad

The two holes on back of the mid-section are iddle exhaust relief holes and should spit water.

Two holes in lower midsection, above antiventilation plate are drain-holes and will drain water bled from waterpumpshaft. Holes in front of midsection are also drainholes. It sounds like you cooling system works. However the thermostat should be changed, it sounds like it is stuck open, not allowing motor to heat up - easy and cheap to change on those ! Should give you better iddle and less smoke to get running temparature. An advise: Change cooling pump impeller, vanes often suddenly breaks after sitting long = siezed motor. Change gear oil in lower unit gear, and thermostat. A carb clean and you should be good to go. Good luck

Thank you for the information and the advice. Where might I find the thermostat? I can't find any reference for it in my shop manual.

Chad

The thermostat is behind the waterjack cover, it is behind the "bubble" beyond the upper sparkplug in the middle. Waterjack has to get off and notice the position of spring and grommet when you remove it.
